چکیده

Converging lines of evidence from basic science and clinical studies suggest a relationship between maternal immune activation (MIA) and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia. The mechanisms through which MIA increases the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders have become a subject of intensive research. This review aims to describe how dysregulation of microglial function and immune mechanisms may link MIA and neurodevelopmental pathologies. We also summarize the current evidence in animal models of MIA. Developmental Dynamics 247:588-619, 2018. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The impact of COVID-19 during pregnancy on fetal brain development

The development of the brain as the most complex structure of the human body is a long process that begins in the third week of pregnancy and continues until adulthood and even until the end of life (1). Human brain myelination begins one to two months before birth in the visual system and eventually lasts until the age of two in other sensory systems and then the motor systems (4). Processes a...

Prenatal zinc supplementation ameliorates hippocampal astrocytes activation and inflammatory cytokines expression induced by lipopolysaccharide in a rat model of maternal immune activation

Objective: There is evidence that gestational exposure to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) results in fetal zinc deficiency, and eventually neurodevelopmental abnormalities. In this study, we utilized a rat model of maternal immune activation (MIA) to investigate the possible neuroprotective effect of zinc supplementation throughout pregnancy on hippocampal astrocytes activation as well as inflammatory...

Therapeutic Targets for Neurodevelopmental Disorders Emerging from Animal Models with Perinatal Immune Activation

Increasing epidemiological evidence indicates that perinatal infection with various viral pathogens enhances the risk for several psychiatric disorders. The pathophysiological significance of astrocyte interactions with neurons and/or gut microbiomes has been reported in neurodevelopmental disorders triggered by pre- and postnatal immune insults. Recent studies with the maternal immune activati...

A possible serologic biomarker for maternal immune activation-associated neurodevelopmental disorders found in the rat models

Epidemiological studies have shown that maternal infection during early pregnancy increases the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders (i.e., schizophrenia or autism) in offspring. Recently, diagnostic/stratification biomarkers for the maternal immune activation background in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders have been energetically searched for in the patient blood. Here, we report a no...

P 115: Potential Therapeutic Targets Related to Neuroinflammation in Treatment and Prevention of Autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with others and using language. In the last four decades many studies have shown that immune responses in different regions of brain play an important role in ASD pathogenicity. A conservative estimate based on the research suggests tha...
